Operation Blue Star

June 1st - June 10th, 1984

Operation Blue Star began on June 1st all the way till June 10th in 1984. This took place in the city Amritsar, which is located in the North-Western part of Punjab and is close to the Pakistan border. The Prime Minister at that time, Indira Gandhi, ordered an attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib, which is a Gurdwara. Gurdwara is a Sikh place of worship. In June, the government deployed troops to remove militants who had occupied the Harmandir Sahib. Their goal was to capture Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers. Indira Gandhi wanted to get rid of Khalistani’s. The Khalistan movement is a Sikh separatist movement wanting to create a separate country for Sikhs by establishing a sovereign state, called “Khalistan”. Khalistan would consist of the Indian state of Punjab and the Pakistani province of Punjab. During the attacks, the military campaign caused serious damage to the Gurdwara, which resulted in 492 civilians and 83 army men dead. This included, pilgrims, militants, and security personnel. Another fact about Operation Blue Star is that it was called that name because it took place after midnight.
